Well I started this thread. Since then I've found a document which
explains the DOS version numbers (see below). Paul Hill got it
right in his reply to me. DOS3 is not a cache system.

DOS0 : The old FileSystem that is compatible to all Kickstarts.
DOS1 : The orginal FastFileSystem.
DOS2 : This international version of the Old Filesystem.
DOS3 : The international version of the FastFilesystem.
DOS4 : The Directory-Cache version of the Old FileSystem.
DOS5 : The Directory-Cache version of the FastFileSystem.
